The 56-year-old, who has been a familiar face on BBC Look East for almost three decades, revealed that she retrained in her 50s and now wants to devote more time to her second profession.

Her departure marks the end of a remarkable broadcasting career during which she interviewed eight prime ministers and reported on some of the biggest stories in modern British history.

BBC presenter explains why she is leaving

Announcing her decision in a video message to viewers, Fowler-Watt reflected on almost 30 years presenting the regional news programme.

"I've been sitting on this sofa or a version of it for nearly 30 years now presenting the programme," she said.

"I've been at the BBC for 35 but I have some news, I am leaving the BBC because I want to concentrate on my new career as a psychotherapist."

She explained that her change of direction began six years ago, when she decided to return to studying at the age of 50.

"I went and trained when I was 50, six years ago, and I am now really keen to invest in that new chapter in my life," she said.

Despite her excitement about the future, the presenter admitted that leaving the BBC would be emotional.

"But oh my goodness, what a joy this job has been, what a privilege it has been. I have loved it."

She thanked colleagues and viewers for their support
