For those of you who are not familiar with the area of Dulwich in South London, it has always been considered an affluent village-like neighbourhood. It is known as the home for the Dulwich Picture Gallery, which as well as having a permanent collection of Baroque masterpieces, hosts leading exhibitions.

Dulwich is also the home of newsreader Huw Edwards, wife Vicky Flind, and a host of A-list celebrities, who either live there presently or have in the past. Two big name stars who have called Dulwich their home in the past include Tom Cruise and his former wife Nicole Kidman.

Back in 1999, The Los Angeles Times reported that Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman bought a house in Dulwich for $3.28 million. The article said that “The couple’s new London home was built about the turn of the century and is 4,000 square feet, local real estate agents said.”

Actress Sally Hawkins, who has starred in such movies as ‘Paddington,’ ‘The Shape of Water’ and the forthcoming movie ‘Wonka’ with Timothée Chalamet, was born in Dulwich and went to James Allen’s Girls School in the area. Other celebrities who reportedly  live in Dulwich include comedian Jo Brand, actor James Nesbitt and Lee Mack.

Dulwich is also home to Dulwich College, the prestigious private day and boarding school for boys. In honour of the founder of Dulwich College, Edward Alleyn, former pupils are known as ‘Old Alleynians’ (OAs) and they include explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton and writer PG Wodehouse.

Vicky Flind, the wife of Huw Edwards is also a governor at Dulwich College. In 2015, Huw Edwards gave his thoughts on themes such as 18th century London history in an event at Dulwich College Old Library.

If you are hoping to catch a glimpse of celebrities in Dulwich, the place to hang out is Volcano Coffee Works Cafe  in West Dulwich, which was founded by Kurt Stewart. For those of you who are looking for a restaurant setting, try Megan’s in the Hamlet, where you can enjoy such dishes as ‘Buttermilk Fried Chicken’ and ‘Maple & Bacon Pancakes.’

As one would expect, properties in Dulwich are incredibly expensive. According to Right Move, “Properties in Dulwich had an overall average price of £733,519 over the last year.”
