Fans of HBO hit The White Lotus are abuzz with some revelations that made their way to Variety earlier today. Sources close to the production of the series are claiming that the next location could very well be Thailand, with Mike White’s comments at the conclusion of season two indicating that these rumours might have some substance.

White hinted in a clip at the end of the Season 2 finale that while the first season focused on money and the second season on sex, a potential third season could take a satirical and humorous approach to themes of death, Eastern religion, and spirituality; he sees these themes as a rich tapestry for another instalment of The White Lotus.

Those aspects of Eastern religion and spirituality have indicated Asia as the setting for the new series, but it took sources to inform Variety that Thailand would be that location. The country itself has been considered a menagerie of cultures and religions, with its architecture and traditions influenced by Buddhism, Hinduism and Animism - Buddhism being the most prominent religion and one that the West have long embraced since the 1960s.

But for Peopleworld, it’s the idea of Mike White perhaps tapping into the tenets of Animism that we think would make for an interesting storyline; that non-human entities, such as animals, plants, and even inanimate objects, possess a spiritual essence or soul. The belief is based on the idea that all things in nature are connected and have their own unique consciousness, and therefore should be treated with respect and reverence.

With all respect to the religion, it does seem the kind of foundation that could be subjugated by a charismatic snake oil salesperson, which given episodes in the previous season could be a character trait the writers lean into. But while we guess what ultimately Mike White commits to screen, where could the fabled hotel that acts as the characters homebase throughout the adventures be if filming does take place in Thailand?

One of the unique features of Zeavola Resort is its commitment to sustainability and preserving the local culture. The resort's villas are built using local materials, such as teakwood and thatched roofs, and the interiors are decorated with traditional Thai artefacts and handicrafts. Given the series’ knack of using art as a metaphorical device, we could see this being a choice should the characters engage in new age spirituality.
