The trailer shows Anna Maxwell Martin (Motherland) and Rachael Stirling (The Bletchley Circle) as sisters whose young children are similar ages to their missing school friend and neighbour.

So, when is Hollington Drive on ITV and what can you expect from the show? This is what you need to know.

What is Hollington Drive about?

From acclaimed screenwriter Sophie Petzal, Hollington Drive tells the story of family trauma, difficult relationships and the pursuit of the truth, however hard it may be to stomach.

The official synopsis reads: “Hollington Drive focuses on the lives of sisters, Theresa, and her older headteacher sibling, Helen. Theresa is married to Fraser and David to Helen.

“The sisters appear close and their families enjoy spending time together. We open on a warm, balmy evening, barbecue sizzling on the patio, the perfect family setting. The atmosphere is chilled, as they lounge in Theresa and Fraser’s perfectly manicured garden. Apart from Fraser’s brother Eddie winding everyone up, there’s hardly a hint of tension, but this is the calm before the storm.

“When Theresa’s ten-year-old son, Ben, asks to play in the nearby park with his cousin Eva, the adults begin to niggle. Fraser is relaxed and is fine for them to go, but this doesn’t help Theresa’s fears of foreboding and growing feelings of anxiety.

“As expected the children don’t return on time, and Theresa goes in search. Her suspicions are heightened when she finds the children on the edge of a woodland area and they appear to be fighting. Immediately her instincts tell her something terrible has happened.

“This is all too realised when later that evening distraught neighbour, Jean, calls on the family. Her ten-year-old son Alex has gone missing.”

While the trailer makes it clear that a child goes missing and families are concerned over the safety of their neighbourhood, Anna Maxwell Martin told ITV: “On paper this looks like another drama about a kiddie going missing, but it’s not that.”

“The real centrifugal force of the drama is this hideously co-dependent relationship between Theresa and Helen. It’s very complex and you just can’t really work out what’s going on between them,” she added, “Hollington Drive is about a lot of things, but that relationship between Theresa and Helen is the main driver of it, and it’s exposed and ripped open by the child’s disappearance.”

The four-part thriller follows a dysfunctional mother and the co-dependence of siblings who share so much yet hide their own personal ills in plain sight.

Writer Sophie Petzal said of the storyline: “There are twists and turns and it goes off in a direction you don’t expect. It’s quite quirky and it has an incredible cast giving nuanced performances.
