A man who seemingly has the ability to always make comments that raise eyebrows, Jeremy Clarkson is once again a source of debate.

The controversial TV broadcaster and personality has spoken in his column in The Times about why people should save less in the bank and instead spend to “create memories on their travels.”

But while many may agree with Clarkson, his mention of how he has managed to tuck away “some savings” in his life and how instead of saving in the bank, we should go to Barbados may not have struck the right chord with a lot of people.

Given his successful TV career and an estimated net worth of £55 million, Clarkson seems out of touch with the reality of many with his definition of ‘some savings’. And while we know he frequently travels to Barbados and other holiday hotspots, that isn’t the realty many currently face.

Given the ensuing cost of living crisis, luxury holidays just aren’t a feasible option for many people and asa result, saving for a rainy day is probably what many people have in mind.

In his column published on April 2, Clarkson, 62, said: “Because which is better? Getting a cheery letter from the bank to say they’ve “only” lost 3 per cent of your money this year and that you should definitely stick with them for the next decade because they plan to lose even less than that in the future? Or going to Barbados and making a few memories?”

PeopleWorld takes a look at where Jeremy Clarkson likes to travel in light of his advice.

Barbados

Barbados seems to be a holiday destination Jeremy is a big fan of. He wrote in September 2021 in his column about how he has spent nearly every Easter there for the last 20 years.

In fact, in 2017 he and his girlfriend Lisa Hogan both travelled to Barbados together as the soaked up the sun.

Seychelles

Also mentioned in his column, Clarkson wrote in January 2022 about how he went to the Seychelles for a few days.

Cornwall

Ditching long-haul flights during the Covid pandemic, Jeremy Clarkson spoke about how he headed to Cornwall for a short break where he relived memories from his childhood.

He visited Portscatho, St Mawes and Porthleven - where he had a "historic" meal at Kota Kai Bar and Kitchen.

While saving in banks may be harder right now than it has been in previous years, it’s not hard to understand while many may see this as the safest way to keep hold of their money.

Besides, the vast majority of people are still paid their wages in their manner, and it’s impossible to see that changing any time soon.

Clarkson has an argument in pointing out how even celebrities like Sharon Stone recently lost $21 million - showing how the wealth of the rich and famous also isn’t secure right now.

But arguing that we should all be quick to spend on holidays seems desperately out of touch with how many people are currently living.

Clarkson isn’t arguing we should be quick to spend frivolously at all, but with many spending much more just to live at the moment, a trip to Barbados is hardly the right call for us all.
