New Waterloo Road cast 2022: who will return alongside Adam Thomas - and newcomers with Scarlett Thomas

Waterloo Road fans will be rejoicing after the BBC announced that the show was set to return to screens.

The popular drama, set in a school, originally ran from 2006 until 2015, and remained popular with younger audiences even as it became available on the BBC iPlayer.

Die-hard fans will have a few familiar faces to welcome them back to the new revival series.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new series, who’s in it and when it will be on.

Who is returning in the new Waterloo Road series?

The BBC made the announcement of a revival of the series with the reveal of returning actors.

Angela Griffin will reprise her role as teacher Kim Campbell in the series.

High school sweethearts Clo and Dante will also return, being played respectively by Katie Griffiths and Adam Thomas.

Adam will be best known to audiences as Adam Barton from Emmerdale, while Anegal Griffin is known to audiences for her work as Fiona Middleton in Coronation Street.

The BBC made the reveal on social media on 24 January, saying: “Look who’s coming back to school!”

Angela spoke of her excitement, saying: “It is exciting to be stepping back into Kim’s shoes and I can’t wait to explore her life, character and how she has evolved since we last met her.

“The writers have some amazing storylines planned and I’m looking forward to welcoming viewers back to Waterloo Road.”

Who is in the Waterloo Road cast?

Following the announcement of the TV show’s return, and returning characters, producers named Kym Marsh and Rachel Leskovac will also be joining the school’s staff.

Now, the turn of the pupils has arrived, as Adam Thomas revealed the young actors to play the pupils in the new Waterloo Road series, which included his niece and Tina O’Brien’s daughter Scarlett Thomas.

Scarlett follows in the family footsteps in appearing on the show and has been announced to play ‘Izzy Charles’, daughter to characters Donte and Chlo Charles.

Fellow junior student cast includes Summer Violet Bird playing ‘Tonya Walters’, Ava Flannery as ‘Verity King’, Thapelo Ray (Doctors) cast as ‘Dwanye Jackson’, Inathi Rozani (Biff and Chip) joining as ‘Zayne Jackson’, Chiamaka (ChiChi) Ulebor playing ‘Shola Aku’ with Sahil Ismailkhil as Norrulah Ashimi - who was talent scouted following a production research trip to a local Leeds school.

Actors playing pupil characters have been announced as Adam Abbou (Time), joining the cast as ‘Danny Lewis’, Priyasasha Kumari (You Don’t Know Me) playing ‘Samia Choudhry’, with Noah Valentine (The Bay) joining as ‘Preston Walters’. Adam Ali (Little America) has been cast as ‘Kai Sharif’ while Alicia Forde joins as ‘Kelly-Jo Rafferty’, Francesco Piacentini-Smith (Masters Of The Air) cast as ‘Dean Weever’, Liam Scholes (Coronation Street) as ‘Noel McManus’ and Lucy Eleanor Begg as ‘Caz Williams’.

What is Waterloo Road about?

Set in a high school setting, Waterloo Road follows the lives and drama of its students and staff.

Some of the most iconic storylines from the show includes the death of pupil Sambuca Kelly from a brain tumour, the school being blown up in a gas explosion cause by a lit cigarette and fan favourite teacher Tom Clarkson falling to his death from the school’s roof.

The series was set in Greater Manchester from series one until series seven, returning for the final series in 2015.

Greenock in Scotland served as the setting for a portion of the show between series eight and ten.

The new revival series will be set in Greater Manchester.

When is the new Waterloo Road series out?

Filming on the new series will commence in February 2022.

There is currently no set air date for the highly anticipated comeback series, although it is expected to be later this year.

It will be released on BBC One and in the BBC iPlayer.
