The Bold Type, the popular US drama about three women working in magazine publishing, is being added to BBC iPlayer for the first time.

All five seasons of the series, which starred The White Lotus’ Megann Fahy, will be available to stream online this August - marking the UK debut of the fifth series.

What is The Bold Type about?

According to the official BBC synopsis for The Bold Type, the series “gives us a glimpse into the outrageous lives of Jane, Kat and Sutton, three millennials who work in New York at the nation’s top women’s magazine, Scarlet, as they navigate the turbulent world of publishing, their identities and individual voices.”

Is The Bold Type based on a true story?

Yes, it is! The Bold Type is based loosely on the life of Joanna Coles, who was previously Editor-in-Chief of Marie Claire and Cosmopolitan. Coles serves as executive producer on The Bold Type, and delivers a voiceover introducing each episode too.

Who stars in The Bold Type?

Katie Stevens plays Jane Sloan, a reporter at Scarlet Magazine. Stevens is perhaps best known for competing in the ninth season of American Idol, but as an actor you might also recognise her from the MTV series Fakin’ It or the horror movie Polaroid.

Meghann Fahy plays Sutton Brady, a stylist at Scarlet Magazine. In recent years, Fahy has received particular acclaim for her role as Daphne in The White Lotus; you might also recognise her from appearances in The Good Wife, Deception, and the film Miss Sloane. 

They’re joined by Aisha Dee (Safe Home) as Kat Edison, Sam Page (Mad Men) as Richard Logan, Matt Ward (Arrow) as Alex Crawford, Melora Hardin (The Office) as high-powered Editor-in-Chief Jacquelyn Carlyle, and Stephen Conrad Moore (Empire) as Oliver Grayson.

Who writes and directs The Bold Type?

The Bold Type was created by Sarah Watson (Parenthood). Watson departed after the end of the first series, citing creative differences, and was replaced by Amanda Lasher (Gossip Girl) who served as showrunner through to the end of the series.

When and how can I watch The Bold Type?

The Bold Type will be available to stream as part of a boxset on BBC iPlayer from Wednesday 16 August.

How many episodes are there?

The Bold Type ran for five seasons between 2017 and 2021, ultimately totalling 52 episodes (each of which are around 45 minutes long). Every episode will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer, with Series 5 making its UK debut for the first time.

Where is The Bold Type filmed?

Like many US shows, The Bold Type was filmed primarily in Canada, with production based in Toronto. Key scenes were occasionally filmed in New York - in particular around Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park - but for the most part any and all of its New York-set scenes were in fact filmed in Montreal or Toronto. 

Why should I watch The Bold Type?

It’s one to watch if you’ve previously enjoyed the likes of Younger, Gossip Girl, or Pretty Little Liars.
