The Great British Bake Off is heating up, with only half the bakers remaining, Caramel week proved tricky, sticky and difficult to crack.

Episode seven focused on sweet, oozing caramel, with the bakers once again having to complete a trio of challenges made up of the signature, technical and showstopper.

Even the series’ favourites struggled to perfect sugary creations, with flavours being lost in the sickly sweet notes of caramel and others struggling to hit the right temperature to ensure their caramel didn’t set like it’s teeth-pulling cousin, toffee.

While usually there is an obvious winner for Star Bakers, Prue and Paul struggled to choose between four of the six. The baker axed from the tent was also a difficult decision.

So, who left the tent and who was crowned Star Baker? This is everything you need to know.

Who was voted off Bake Off week seven?

The first challenge saw the bakers making caramel tarts - the pastry had to be thin and a slice of the tart had to show layers of finesse.

While the bakers seemed to nail their flavour profiles, achieving perfectly set caramel was incredibly difficult.

George struggled throughout, though his flavours were given the nod of approval by judge, Prue Leith.

Then came the Twix technical, though for copyright reasons it was called a caramel biscuit bar with chocolate coating.

Host Matt Lucas wasn’t convinced....

Jurgen and Giuseppe rose to the challenge, while Lizzie and George struggled to get the perfect shortbreak base.

Paul described Lizzie’s as “like bubblegum”, while George’s timings were all wrong and his caramel dripped down the sides of the bar while his chocolate failed to set on top.

By day two, George admitted he had already packed his bags, adamant he was going home. But co-host Noel Fielding had faith.

The team were tasked with making decadent cakes with a caramel element, as well as a sugar dome to cover their cake.

While Giuseppe and Jurgen reclaimed their titles as this season’s leading bakers, Lizzie finally managed finesse but lacked substance when she made an upside down dome filled with caramel cake - which Prue described as “inedible”.

George produced a stunning cake and difficult sugar dome, which even Paul Hollywood praised him for.

However it was not enough to save him from being axed from the tent, as he was sent home.

Who was crowned star baker?

Star Baker was difficult to call this week, as none of the bakers had a faultless weekend, but Crystelle, Chiggs, Jurgen and Giuseppe all rose to the challenge in the final bake.

In the signature challenge, Jurgen’s caramel was dark and bitter - the first time he had received particularly critical feedback.

Giuseppe also struggled, as his flavour profile was described as “too sweet”, while Chiggs and Crystelle achieved smooth, sweet caramel deliciousness.

In the signature, Jurgen came runner up to Giuseppe’s Twix fingers, much to no one’s surprise.

In the showstopper challenge, it was all to play for.

Chiggs’ dessert failed to come top of the table when he failed to set his caramel and it ran out of his cake.

Crystelle struggled until the last minute, remaking her dome and then sticking it to a cake mould by accident - but her mirror glaze was so shiny Noel could see his face in it.

Giuseppe's salted caramel and praline dessert was just short of perfect, as the caramel was too sticky and overpowered the cake.

Therefore, when Prue described Jurgen’s lady finger-dressed caramel contrast cake as “one of the best desserts I’ve ever eaten” and took second helpings, he had secured his third star baker accolade of the series.
