The Great British Bake Off has returned for another 10 weeks of cakes, bakes, break and buns.

Episode five focused on all-things-German, with the bakers once again having to complete a trio of challenges made up of the signature, technical and showstopper.

The choice for star baker was close as prior winner Giuseppe, two-time winner Jurgen and last week’s winner Chigs all competed to be crowned star baker once again, but did someone else win the accolade? And, who left the tent in week five? This is everything you need to know.

Who was voted off Bake Off week five?

The first challenge saw the bakers making traditional German Christmas biscuits as part of the signature challenge, with German baker Jurgen gaining a coveted Paul Hollywood handshake.

The technical challenge required the contestants to make Prinzregententorte - also known as Prince Regent’s Cake - which is eight layers of genoise sandwiched with chocolate custard and coated in ganache, with Giuseppe claiming the top spot in the challenge.

The showstopper then saw the bakers asked to make a Yeast-Leavened Cake.

But it was vegan baker Freya who sadly waved goodbye to the Bake Off tent.

In a letter penned by the 19-year-old and shared on Bake Off’s official Twitter page, Freya said: “This was by far the best experience of my life”.

She added: “I feel genuinely blessed to have had the chance to share my love of vegan baking with the world”.

In the past five weeks, we have also waved goodbye to Tom (week one), Jairzeno (week two), Rochica (week 3) and Maggie (week 4).

While it has become apparent that Jurgen and Giuseppe could replace Paul and Prue as GBBO judges, the German and Italian baking wizards were rivalled last week by Chigs.

But Giuseppe won back the star baker crown once again this week.
