Nerja Costa del Sol: British man found dead in Spain after vanishing on holiday with his wife

A British pensioner has been found dead in Spain after he vanished on holiday.

Iain Stanley, 79, was last seen near the Perla Marina Hotel in Nerja, on the eastern end of the Costa del Sol, in Spain, on February 11. He disappeared after leaving a holiday home, with the last sighting recorded at about 2pm that day.

His wife reported him missing, sparking an investigation led by the Civil Guard and now sadly in an update the local authorities have confirmed his body has been located. Mr Stanley, said to have been in good health, was wearing black jeans, a shirt and a blue jacket when he was last seen.

He was without his mobile phone or his passport. News of his disappearance quickly circulated on several local expat Facebook groups.

Relatives also appealed for information on his whereabouts. Now a rescue team has located Mr Stanley’s body near Ladera del Mar and Tamango Hill which is a steep area with ravines that separates Nerja from neighbouring Torrox.

Forensic teams have gone to the scene as part of the investigation into what happened. Spanish authorities are now awaiting the results of an autopsy so that they can determine the cause of death, although they have said at this stage there is no sign of any criminal involvement. It appears to detectives that Mr Stanley may have become disorientated and lost his way during a walk, local reports suggest.

Many people have left tributes and expressed their sadness online after the news that his body has been found. One person wrote on Facebook: "Terrible news. My thoughts are with his family at this very sad time. RIP.Iain." Another said: "Rest In Peace Ian, a true gentleman."
