Some local authorities in the UK recorded more deaths than expected during January and February of this year.

Analysis of mortality data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), National Records of Scotland and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency shows 100 local authorities across the UK recorded excess deaths during the first two months of the year.

Nationwide, the UK recorded 5,505 fewer deaths than usually expected during the months of January and February. In total 112,298 deaths were recorded but the UK would normally expect to see 117,803 deaths recorded during the same period.

Excess deaths are the number of deaths above the 2015 to 2019 five-year average (pre-pandemic).

Some local authorities had dozens of excess deaths in January and February.
