The towns and cities in England with the current highest Covid-19 infection rates have been named by Public Health England (PHE).

The figures are based on the seven days up to 19 March, and are based on tests carried out in laboratories and in the wider community.

Data for the last five days, from 20 to 24 March, have been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

Where are infection rates rising and falling?

Of the 315 local areas in England, a total of 120 (38 per cent) have seen a rise in coronavirus case rates, 188 (60 per cent) have seen a fall and seven remain unchanged.

Barnsley currently has the highest infection rate in England, with 478 new cases recorded in the seven days to 19 March.

This amounts to the equivalent of 193.6 cases per 100,000 people, and marks a rise from 153.9 in the seven days previous, up to 12 March.

Corby in Northamptonshire has the second highest infection rate overall, with the rate unchanged week-on-week at 182.8, with 132 new cases.

North Lincolnshire has the third highest rate, up from 126.5 to 167.2, with 288 new cases.

Of the 120 areas in England to record a week-on-week rise, the five areas with the biggest increases are:
