A nurse died with Covid before meeting her new-born daughter after refusing to get the vaccine while pregnant.

Mum-of-five Davy Macias, 37, died after contracting the virus while on holiday with husband Daniel, and their four children.

Her family said she was wary of getting the vaccine while pregnant with her baby, who was delivered while she was in hospital with severe symptoms.

She never got to meet her new daughter, born two weeks ago, who is named ‘Baby Girl Macias’ because dad Daniel is in a critical condition in hospital with Covid.

‘Covid doesn’t have any rules; it doesn’t discriminate. Get vaccinated’

Davy’s brother Vong Serey, 40, is now sharing her story to persuade others to get their COVID vaccination.

Vong said: "To lose any family member is hard; when they are young moms, pregnant, and an amazing person, it is just that much harder.

"She had such a positive attitude, and not once thought it would end this way.

"It is really hard to believe this is actually happening.

"The family is coming together to make sure the kids have what they need which is keeping us all busy.

"Covid doesn’t have any rules; it doesn’t discriminate. Get vaccinated."

Family became ill after returning from holiday

Relatives have said labour and delivery nurse Davy worked throughout the pandemic until she was seven months pregnant.

The family went on holiday to the Great Wolf Lodge in Santa Ana, California, US, with their four children, aged seven, five, three and two, but became ill when they returned around August 2.

The whole family tested positive with Covid-19, and while the kids bounced back, both parents were hospitalised on August 12, when Davy was 34 weeks pregnant.

Vong said: "She wasn’t feeling great, had pneumonia, but was still optimistic."

On August 18, doctors decided to deliver her baby daughter via c-section six weeks early in an attempt to save both their lives.

"We were told that Davy’s lungs were collapsing, she had blood clots and was spiking fevers," said Vong Tragically, the mum from San Bernardino County, California, never made it to see her daughter and passed away on the morning of August 26.

‘Davy was a super mum’

Daniel Macias is still currently in hospital in critical condition but showing improvement every day. He does not know that his wife of eleven years has passed.

The now two-week-old infant, known currently as ‘Baby Girl Macias’ until Daniel recovers and can name her, is in the NICU but doing well.

Vong believes that his younger sister did not get the vaccine as she was wary about potential effects on her pregnancy.

The other kids, Greyson, Kali, Eris and Aili are being looked after by their paternal grandparents while their father is in the hospital.

A fundraiser was started by relatives to help the children with food, clothing and other expenses.

Vong said: "Davy was a super mum - she was selfless and made sure that her kids and patients had everything they needed.

"She was always smiling and I am not really sure when she slept.

"She volunteered in her kid’s schools, threw them adorable themed birthday parties and made sure they knew they were loved.

"She was the glue that held us all together.

"I can imagine the really hard part will come in a month or two when reality kicks in.

"At the same time, its amazing to see the positive impact Davy has had on so many people’s lives."
