Tesco has announced more job cuts across its stores as it plans to axe more than 1,400 overnight roles.

The supermarket said the jobs will be cut at several of its supermarkets and petrol station stores, putting thousands of workers at risk of redundancy.

Tesco said the vast majority of these redundancies would be a result of changing overnight staffing structures at many shops.

Under the plans, the retailer will remove overnight stocking in 36 large stores, 49 convenience stores and will convert 36 petrol stations to be pay-at-pump only during overnight hours.

Jason Tarry, Tesco UK and Republic of Ireland chief executive, said: “We operate in a highly competitive and fast-paced market, and our customers are shopping differently, especially since the start of the pandemic.

“We are always looking at how we can run our business as simply and efficiently as possible, so that we can reinvest in the things that matter most to customers.

“The changes we are announcing today will help us do this.

“Our priority now is to support our impacted colleagues through these changes and, wherever possible, find them alternative roles within our business.”

Futher closures and cuts

The news comes after the retailer confirmed on Monday (31 January) that it plans to close its Jack’s discount supermarket chain, with seven stores shutting for good while the remaining six will become Tesco shops.

It said the combined changes will put around 1,600 workers at risk.

Tesco is also closing its meat, fish and deli counters across 317 of its stores which will impact hundreds of workers, but it is yet to confirm how many staff will be affected.

The retailer said the closures will be made in stores with the “lowest demand”, following changes in customer shopping habits.

As a result, it will now have only 279 stores with meat, fish and deli counters after seeing a “decrease” in the number of customers using the counters on a regular basis.

The company plans to “repurpose” the counters across the 317 stores impacted and affected staff will be offered alternative roles.
