It’s been 50 years since the creator of the mobile phone made the first ever phone call. On 3 April 1973, Marty Cooper stood on a street corner in New York, United States, and took a cream coloured device out of his pocket, put a number into the keypad on it and made a call.
It was the first portable, handheld phone of its kind - although the huge, chunky device looked very different to the mobile phones we are used to today. By modern standards, in fact, we may even question just how portable it actually was but, for its time, it was revolutionary.
To celebrate this historic milestone, NationalWorld has looked back at 11 other mobile phones that also changed the communications industry because of the features that they offered. Take a look through our gallery to see how many you remember.

5. Blackberry Bold 9000
Blackberry phones were revolutionary for their time, and the Blackberry Bold 9000 series - released in 2008 - was known for offering a full QWERTY keyboard, distinctive shape, expensive materials such as leather exterior and exclusive messaging features. Who can forget asking your friends who also had Blackberrys for their BBM code so you could chat? For those who didn’t have one, BBM (or BlackBerry messenger) was like an early version of Whatsapp and you felt like you were part of a really exclusive club if you had it. | Amazon

6. Nokia N95
The release of the Nokia N95 in March 2007 was hugely important because it offered many of the vital modern day features we see in today’s mobile phones including internet, a 5-megapixel camera (which was impressive in its day), GPS, video recording and video player and also music player. | Getty Images

7. iPhone
The first iPhone came out in June 2007, and was the first smartphone created by Apple. It was the first phone to offer a touchscreen interface instead of the traditional buttons and keyboard. It was intended to combine Apple's hugely popular iPod music player with a phone. It was a pivotal moment in the industry as it meant for the first time people didn’t have to carry two devices around with them. There was no app store at first, that wasn’t introduced until July 2008, but when it was released it completely changed the landscape of what people could do with their phones. | Getty Images

8. iPhone 4
We’re all used to having a phone with a forward-facing camera now so we can take the best selfies, but this wasn’t an option until the iPhone was released back in 2010. The front camera was actually introduced to aid with another new exciting feature at the time, FaceTime, which allowed people to have video calls with their loved ones. The iPhone 4 also looked a bit like the sleeker design we are used to today. | Getty Images
