Why has the internet stopped working? Cloudflare outage takes websites down with huge spikes on DownDetector

Internet users faced new issues this morning as internet service provider Cloudflare has gone down.

People struggled to access several websites, including LinkedIn, Deliveroo and Downdetector this morning. Many people facing issues possibly linked to the Cloudflare outage took to social media, with one writing on Reddit: "Here we go again, it's down!"

Cloudflare is estimated to provide services to one in five of the world’s websites. The cloud service operator is similar to other brands such as Amazon’s AWS and Microsoft’s Azure.

This is the second outage in less than a month after the service faced disruption on November 18. The previous outage left many websites offline for around three hours after another “internal service degradation”, which it said was due to an unusual spike in traffic to one of Cloudflare’s services.

This morning Cloudflare said: “In progress - Scheduled maintenance is currently in progress. We will provide updates as necessary.”

This maintenance appears to be causing problems. It is understood that several major global brands have been impacted by the outage.

Canva, Spotify, X, LinkedIn, Discord and Shopify are all understood to be facing a range of issues as a result of the outage. Cloudflare confirmed it is experiencing "internal service degradation".
