Aldi store closures: Budget supermarket reveals it will close all shops to allow extra break for staff - why is it closing?
Aldi is known for its head-on marketing but the supermarket’s latest move has left shoppers stunned - it is completely closing all shops for three days.
The budget chain has taken several moves in recent years to make sure it is seen as a good employer which is keen to look after its staff. And the latest surprise move certainly seems to back that up.
Not only will all Aldi branches be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day - they will also lock their doors on Boxing Day too.
It isn’t the first time this has happened and bosses describe it as “giving colleagues the chance to spend time with friends and family’.
The UK’s fourth-largest supermarket will close for Christmas Day and reopen as usual on Saturday, December 27 .
Stores will also be closed on New Year’s Day as usual, reopening once again on Friday 2nd January 2026.
Opening hours will vary in the days leading up to Christmas, with Aldi operating extended hours to ensure customers can stock up ahead of the big day.
Rebecca Heley, Communications Director at Aldi UK, said: “Christmas is a special time, and we want to ensure all of our colleagues have the opportunity to relax and enjoy it with their loved ones. That’s why all Aldi stores will be closed on Boxing Day this year.
“We know how hard colleagues work to deliver an amazing Christmas for our customers, and this is one small way of saying thank you.”
Aldi store colleagues received a pay rise earlier this month, with starting pay for Store Assistants increasing to £13.02 an hour nationally, and £14.05 within the M25. Aldi also remains the only supermarket in the UK to offer paid breaks.
