A hungry newlywed couple swapped wedding canapés for steak bakes after secretly ditching their guests for a very Northern snack run.

A newlywed couple left their wedding guests stunned after sneaking off for a secret Greggs feast — and say the surprise snack became one of their favourite memories of the big day.

Amy and Dan Wilkin, from Dipton, County Durham, tied the knot in Newcastle city centre on June 4. But after a nerve-racking morning without breakfast, the hungry pair decided their wedding day needed a very Northern pit stop.

The 29-year-old bride and her 30-year-old barber husband discreetly slipped away from their reception and headed to a nearby Greggs, leaving guests busy with canapés, drinks and live music.

Video footage shows Dan, dressed in a black suit, and Amy, still wearing her plunging white wedding dress, ordering a steak bake and a corned beef bake.

And in a stroke of wedding-day luck, the staff reportedly gave the newlyweds their baked goods for free.

Dan can be heard telling the staff member: “You’re a legend.”

Photos from the impromptu snack run show the beaming couple sharing their pasties while linking arms outside the shop.

Amy said: “We were absolutely starving at that point. We hadn’t had any breakfast because we were so nervous about walking down the aisle.

“We were absolutely desperate for a Greggs.”

The couple then hopped on the Metro to Grey Street, where they even managed to grab photos inside an empty carriage.

Amy said the Greggs stop was a perfect fit for their alternative-themed wedding, which featured rock music and plenty of non-traditional touches.

She added: “Our love story happened in Newcastle city centre so we just wanted to do some really Northern and Newcastle-based things.

“Newcastle is the birthplace of Greggs.”

When the pair returned to the reception, their guests were reportedly stunned to hear where they had been — but loved the photos.

Amy said: “These are my favourite photos of the day.

“We’ve got lots of really good memories but I must admit the Greggs and Metro photos are the ones a lot of our friends and family talk about most.”

The couple, who first met on Tinder in 2020, also bought food for the content creators working on their wedding day.

And Amy has encouraged other couples to ditch tradition if it doesn’t feel like them.

She said: “There’s no rulebook. You can do whatever you want when it comes to getting married.

“It’s all about celebrating you and your partner so there’s no right or wrong — just do what you feel is good for you really.”
