Tashan Daniel, 20, was stabbed in the heart at Hillingdon Tube station in west London as he made his way to the Emirates Stadium to watch Arsenal play.

He worked as a photographer and was a talented athlete who dreamed of going to the Olympics as a 200m sprinter.

The 20-year-old spent a lot of time training at Hillingdon Athletics Stadium and a plaque was unveiled in his memory, in 2021.

Why was Tashan Daniel killed?

On September 24, 2019, Daniel and his friend Treyone Campbell were confronted by Jonathan Camille and Alex Lanning, who had asked Mr Daniel "what he was looking at" across the Tube tracks.

As violence erupted between the men, Lanning pulled out an Eickhorn Aviator 1 army knife designed for NATO military rescues and plunged its whole blade into his victim’s body.

It penetrated the 20-year-old victim’s lung and heart and cut into his breastbone, causing him to lose two-fifths of his blood, which sadly resulted in his death.

The attack lasted 34 seconds from “the first blow to the last act of violence".

CCTV captured the killer and his accomplice laughing as they fled the scene before discarding their blood-stained clothing in a nearby housing estate.

The £250 German-made knife, which Lanning claimed came from the set of the Fast & Furious, was just over 27cm long with a blade measuring 13.5cm and had the capability of sawing through laminated glass.

Who is convicted killer Alex Lanning?

Alex Lanning had been released halfway through a four-year sentence in 2018 for wounding a man and was on licence when he killed Mr Daniel.

In March of that year, Lanning was charged with the attempted murder of William Goodfield after a crack and heroin deal turned sour near the i360 in Brighton.

The victim survived but was stabbed seven times in the chest and had injuries to the back of his head, groin, torso and hand.

Aged 18 at the time, Lanning pleaded guilty at Lewes Crown Court to the lesser charge of wounding with intent and supplying Class A drugs.

Where are Alex Lanning and Jonathan Camille now?

Lanning was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum 25-year term.

His accomplice Jonathan Camille was cleared of murder but found guilty of manslaughter and was sentenced to six years and six months’ detention in a young offenders institute.

The two men had their appeals against conviction dismissed by three appeal judges following a Court of Appeal hearing in London.

What was said about the case?

Nathan Miebai of the CPS said: "Tashan Daniel’s life was brutally cut short by Alex Lanning and Jonathan Camille in a senseless fatal stabbing in front of horrified commuters.

"They had no regard for his life, the pain they caused his family or the trauma of those who witnessed the fatal incident. Today, they have received lengthy sentences for robbing a young man of his life and bright future.”
