Elizabeth Holmes was once branded Forbes' youngest, wealthiest self-made American female billionaire in 2015 but unlike Steve Jobs, an entrepreneur she was compared to on numerous occasions, she turned out to be a 'bad apple.'

The 39-year-old tech founder, who created the now-defunct health technology company Theranos, was found to have defrauded investors out of $700 million dollars when she was ultimately convicted last November, despite being indicted in June 2018 alongside COO Ramesh Balwani.

From one of Forbes' most exciting prospects to Fortune's 'most disappointing leaders', Elizabeth managed to push back her 11 and a quarter year prison sentence but is due to report to a minimum security federal prison in Texas called Bryan in Texas by 2pm today after losing a bid to stay out of prison entirely.

Due to Elizabeth's non-violent crimes, Bryan, unlike other prisons is a work-focused programme, according to the Guardian, where the former Theranos CEO will spend at least 85% of her prison sentence, even if her 'sentence is reduced for good conduct'.

While Balwani started serving his 13-year prison sentence in April, Elizabeth reportedly spent her last free weekend with her husband Billy and their two children; as a result, PeopleWorld takes a look at Elizabeth and her family:

The then-30-year-old established Real Time Cures, later renamed Theranos, a blood testing company that didn’t require needles or large amounts of blood given such as a finger prick, with the backing of early investors such as Rupert Murdoch and the Walton family.

Elizabeth’s father, Christian Rasmus Holmes IV, was a vice president of energy company Enron (that too went bankrupt after an accounting fraud scandal) and held executive positions in government agencies; while her mother worked in Congressional committees.

Shortly after Elizabeth’s company took off, a Wall Street Journal reporter was given a tip off from a medical expert that the blood testing devices were suspicious.

This pin drop kickstarted a large investigation into Elizabeth’s company which resulted in the 2018 case U.S vs Holmes et al. after Elizabeth had to pay a $500,000 fine and relinquish any type of officer or director position at a company for a decade.

It turns out that much of that decade would be spent behind bars for Elizabeth who was convicted alongside her former romantic partner and COO Ramesh Balwani.

Elizabeth was in a relationship with Balwani for more than a decade before she became engaged to hotelier William ‘Billy’ Evans in early 2019.

Who is Billy Evans?

Billy Evans met Elizabeth Holmes just as Theranos was collapsing and within two years the pair had moved in together in San Francisco, tied the knot and had a baby.

Shortly after Elizabeth’s sentencing the couple announced that they were expecting another child, which was reportedly born before Elizabeth’s April 2023 incarceration date.

Billy Evans is the grandson of William and Anne Evans from Evans Hotels, who created a hospitality company in 1953 and currently has three luxury hotels in San Diego.

Similar to his wife, Billy himself worked in technology, holding a position as special projects manager at self-driving car company Luminar Technologies and previously working for LinkedIn.

Billy graduated from MIT with a Bachelor of Science in Economics degree after attending from 2010 to 2015 and undertook a year abroad in China to learn about the language and literature.

Although Billy and Elizabeth kept their relationship mostly private, Billy was seen supporting his wife throughout her court case.
