What makes a breakfast fit for a King? Especially one that fuels the monarch on perhaps the biggest day of his reign?

Ahead of King Charles’ coronation in Westminster Abbey, His Majesty must prepare himself for all the pomp and ceremony including a procession, the regalia and the timeless balcony flypast, scheduled to last until just after 2.30pm.

It must be noted that King Charles in fact does not eat lunch and chooses to lead a vegan/vegetarian diet at least twice a week, therefore his choice of breakfast or brunch on Saturday must be a nutritional one to keep his energy up throughout the day.

Normally the monarch opts for a combination of homemade seeded bread, fresh fruit and boiled eggs to start his day on the right note, paired with fresh fruit juices. To add some further savoury flavours, King Charles is known to forage for his own wild mushrooms and keep an organic garden, so his private chef could cook some of those up for him.

This choice of breakfast would be approved by registered nutritionists such as Anna Tebbs, the Head Chef at healthy meal company Green Chef, who believes that ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’.

In light of King Charles’ usual breakfast options, Anna advised: “Breakfast is a great opportunity to start the day with a range of nutrients, using fibre-packed foods or fruits to fuel you. Simple swaps can make a big difference. Try whole grain bread instead of white, why not add peanut butter and bananas on top? Nut butter is high in protein and fibre, and bananas are great sources of vitamin C and potassium.”

Anna also warned against a ‘sugar crash’, which can happen if one chooses to eat high-sugar cereals (even if they taste quite nice). This could be avoided by consuming berries, nuts and seeds on top of a high-fibre cereal.

As it is his ‘big day’ King Charles could look forward to his favourite meal to kick off the weekend…cheesy baked eggs.

Back in 2020, Clarence House shared the recipe for the then-Prince Charles’ favourite dish in honour of British Cheese Weekender.

Using two types of cheese, specifically one hard and one soft option, one must combine with wilted spinach, chopped cherry tomatoes, basil, eggs and double cream to get the perfect morning meal.

The Clarence House recipe calls for the baked dish to be served with a slice of toasted sourdough after cooking in the oven for 8-10 minutes.
