Prince Harry speaks German at Invictus Games launch; which royal family members are fluent in other languages?

Ahead of the Invictus Games coming to Dusseldorf in September 2023, Prince Harry showcased his talent in learning the country’s language during the kickoff reception on Tuesday.

The Duke of Sussex appeared via video call at the event hosted by local government officials in the first time he was seen since news broke that he would attend the King’s coronation next month.

While Harry has been passionate about the Games since they began in 2014, the Prince revealed his determination to learn the language of this year’s host city by speaking in German. 

Seen in a clip on Twitter, Prince Harry addressed the room in North Rhine-Westphalia saying: “Guten abend, meine damen und herren,” which translates to ‘Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.’

Prince William

According to reports, Prince William can speak a variety of different languages.

The next in line to the throne allegedly can speak French, Gaelic, German, Welsh and Swahili after learning the latter language at university and beginning to educate himself in his role as Prince of Wales.

King Charles

Much like his son and as seen on Netflix’s The Crown, King Charles can speak Welsh and Gaelic in addition to knowing French and German.

The monarch learnt to speak Welsh during his year studying at Aberystwyth University.

Queen Elizabeth

After reigning for 70 years, the late Queen Elizabeth became quite fluent in the language of our neighbouring country across the channel.

French is the most widely spoken second language of the Royal Family with the late Queen’s husband Prince Philip also knowing how to speak French as well as German.

Meghan Markle

While Prince Harry has been taking up language lessons ahead of the Invictus Games, Meghan Markle allegedly knows how to speak Spanish after learning it during her time at the US Embassy in Buenos Aires.

Prince George/Princess Charlotte

Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children have been encouraged to learn a second language.

Prince George and Princess Charlotte are reportedly being taught Spanish and have a nanny who is fluent in the European language.

Prince Michael of Kent

Forget French, Spanish and German, Prince Michael of Kent (Elizabeth II’s first cousin) and his wife Princess Michael of Kent reportedly speak Russian.
