The second born of Harry and Meghan, Princess Lilibet Diana, was christened in California on Friday and rather than a right royal affair, the couple instead decided to undertake the proceedings at home with a small contingent of family and friends. The christening could also be seen as a private celebration over the news Lilibet will indeed be referred to as a princess.

This development stems from King Charles III’s ascension to the throne after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Although she was not a princess at birth, because she was not a granddaughter of the monarch, she gained the right to that title when King Charles acceded to the throne - with the announcement of the christening the first time the title was publicly revealed.

But given that the mystery of why Princess Lilibet Diana received a royal title has now been solved, attention now turns to a matter of ‘who’ rather than ‘why,’ as discussion mounts over who is the unnamed godmother to Princess Lilibet Diana. It’s public knowledge already who her godfather is, with one of Meghan Markle’s close friends Tyler Perry tasked with that responsibility.

But it’s a proverbial game of ‘Guess Who’ when it comes to who the royal godmother is, as the celebrations online now turn to some detective work. Could the godmother be someone that we are familiar with thanks to their appearances in documentaries or as talking heads talking about the couple? Or is it someone that we have yet to meet or know about yet?

Peopleworld takes a look at some of the names that could be that unnamed godmother of Princess Lilibet Diana - all of which were confirmed as friends of the family after the release of the Netflix series “Harry and Meghan.”

A mutual friend of both Meghan Markle and Serena Williams, the former professional tennis player and now sports agent has regularly been seen alongside Meghan while the pair reside in the United States. Considered a pioneer for women sports agents, Smoller started her career in the late 1990s and counts Allyson Felix and Serena Williams as some of her clients.

With a net worth of an estimated $1.7 million and a habit of nurturing young, female talent, could Jill Smoller be the ideal role model Harry and Meghan have looked for in a godmother?

Or could it be another entrepreneurial friend of Meghan’s, Vicky Tsai? A staunch defender of Meghan Markle, many who watched the Netflix series may remember Tsai discussing the allegations of fake tabloid stories being placed to the detriment of the Sussexes. “When you whip up enough people into a fervent of hate, it is not one of those cases of sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me – they can kill you.”

With such a protective side to her, along with boasting a pedigree in the business sector having formed her own company Tatcha in 2009 after receiving an MBA, Tsai’s take on having empathy for yourself as much as other people could be a trait Harry specifically would appreciate.

“We think [beauty and mental wellbeing] starts from the inside out, and the Western world has always been outside in. It only makes sense that as we start to research cultures of well-being that have been around for thousands of years, we’re going to find a way to go deeper,” she told Glamour in 2022

A name that has been floated more often than not around the Peopleworld office is Archie’s former nanny, Lorren Khumalo, as the prospective unnamed godmother. Familiarity for the pair might be the order of the day, with Khumalo having tended to Archie including during the couple’s tour of South Africa in 2019. Though no longer employed by the couple, the three seemingly have remained on very favourable terms post-employment.

Perhaps it’s the synergy also the three have when it comes to the approach to raising a child that might cement Khumalo as the princess’ godmother? “They were really hands-on parents. In the morning when [Archie] woke up, firstly mum and dad would come in, they would be with their baby, she would feed him and then after that I’d take over and normally we’d go for a morning walk,” she revealed in the Netflix series.

Susan Williger

One of Meghan’s longest friends (ever since the dust-up between herself and Jessica Mulroney), having met when they were in seventh grade, Susan Williger has been an enduring figure in Meghan’s life, from her rise to fame to her ascension as a member of the royal family.

But the prospect of being hounded by the press might have put Susan off the idea, having revealed during “Harry and Meghan” that the press began hounding her family after news of the Sussexes’ relationship was made public and accusations that one outlet fabricated quotes from her mother.

‘The press was ruthless,’ she said. ‘They would go to my parents’ home. I remember a friend forwarded me this article where my mom was quoted. It was like, "Oh Meghan’s obsessed with Princess Diana." Just things that never happened and weren’t true at all.’”

Abigail Spencer

She has been considered one of Meghan’s besties after the pair appeared in US television series Suits, and Abigail Spencer can boast a decade of friendship with the Duchess of Sussex. They met before being cast on the USA Network series at an audition where Spencer said of Meghan “She was just so stunning and there was something about her.”

She has been spotted attending baby showers, hiking with the couple on Victoria Island in Canada and even attended the royal wedding in 2018. Though perhaps not as enduring as the friendship with Susan, perhaps Spencer’s familiarity with the bright lights of the paparazzi and entertainment publications might provide insight on how to keep Princess Lilibet Diana safe from those potential hazards?
