Italy’s former Prime Minister and media tycoon Silvio Berlusconi has died in his hometown of  Milan, Italy at the age of 86. 

The Pope and ex-prime minister Tony Blair led the tributes for the former Italian leader. According to BBC News, Pope Francis described him as a “protagonist of Italian political life, who held public responsibilities with energetic temperament”. Tony explained "for me he was a leader whom I found capable, shrewd and, most important, true to his word".

Silvio was previously married to first wife Carla Elvira Dall’Oglio who he was married to for 20 years before divorcing in 1985. Five years before his divorce the billionaire had already started an affair with second wife actress Veronica Lario. The couple married in 1990 and were together for 24 years before getting divorced in 2014. 

His eldest son is Pier Silvio Berlusconi, Chief Executive Officer of Mediaset, he also has three daughters business woman Marina Berlusconi, business executive Barbara Berlusconi Eleonora Berlusconi and youngest son Luigi Berlusconi.

What was Silvio Berlusconi's net worth? 

Silvio had an estimated net worth of $6.8 billion and was the third wealthiest person in Italy. He made his fortune through being a media mogul he owned three national TV channels via the Mediaset company which accounted for half of the national television sector. As well as owning Italian advertising and publicity company Publitalia. 

The businessman also owned football club A.C Milan for over three decades and after turning the club into one of the most successful teams in the world he sold the football club for €740m in 2017.

After becoming successful in sport and media Silvio decided to try politics. He became Prime Minister of Italy four times during his career. 

Where did Silvio Berlusconi live? 

The businessman was born in the Italian city of Milan. After making his fortune Silvio stayed close to his roots buying homes in Italy. 

During the 1980s the former PM bought a 168-acre estate, called Villa Certosa in Sardinia. The 68-room mansion boasted six swimming pools, an amphitheatre and an artificial volcano. Many leaders of the world visited the property including Tony Blair and wife Cherie Blair, Vladimir Putin and George W Bush. He sold the property in 2015 for an estimated £350 million. 

In 1974 the politician reportedly bought the 18th century mansion San Martino in Arcore. The neoclassical Villa had everything from the surrounding park and art gallery to a huge library. According to The Guardian in 2008 Silvio faced rows over plans to extend the property to increase the size of the building by 3,000 square metres.

The mansion was previously a monastery to the order of Saint Benedict but later became well known for the types of parties he held there.
