Last week saw former US President Donald Trump indicted for a third time in as many months, this time with regards to his alleged plans to try and overthrow the democratic decision of the 2020 US Presidential election while juggling time on the campaign trail as the favourite to become the Republican nomination for the 2024 US Presidential election.

Over the weekend, comments have been made by John Lauro, Trump’s latest attorney to join his legal battle, stating that, among other things, how former US vice president Mike Pence would be a valuable asset to Trump’s legal strategy. In an interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos, Lauro suggests that Pence would “be one of our best witnesses,” despite calls from the January 6 mob to “hang Mike Pence” if the result wasn’t overturned.

“I read his book very carefully,” Lauro continued, “and if he testifies consistent with his book, then President Trump will be acquitted for these reasons. Number one, Mr Pence recognises that John Eastman [...] was a renowned legal scholar. Number two, Vice President Pence recognised there were discrepancies and fraud in connection with the election. He wanted it debated on Capitol Hill, Mr Trump wanted it debated in state legislatures.”

“But make no mistake about it, based on what vice president Pence will say, the government will never be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that President Trump had corrupt or criminal intent, and that’s what this case is all about.”

When challenged by Stephanopoulos about Pence’s comments last week that what Donald Trump had done was wrong, Lauro retorted that Pence said what Trump did was wrong, but was never criminal, liking it to voicing displeasure over someone’s conduct but stopping short of calling it criminal.

PeopleWorld takes a look at one the latest to join Donald Trump’s ever-changing legal team, attorney John F Lauro, and why he might be a solid hand in Trump’s seemingly never-ending legal woes ahead of the Republican primaries.

When is the 2024 US Presidental election?

The 2024 US Presidential election will take place on November 5 2023, but much like previous years, don’t expect a clear winner immediately as it can sometimes take weeks for all the ballots to be counter across the 50 states democratically voting whomever the Republican nominee against Democratic Joe Biden will be.
