M1 delays: Huge queues of up to 45 minutes near Luton after car catches fire following collision

Drivers are being warned of huge queues on the M1 after a car caught fire following a collision.

The southbound carriageway has been closed between J12 (Toddington) and J11A (Chalton) due to the incident, which has prompted a response from emergency services. Traffic has also been temporarily paused on the northbound carriageway to allow for an air ambulance to land on the road.

National Highways has warned that drivers currently face delays of more than 45 minutes, with queues building on approach. The traffic service said: “The M1 in Bedfordshire is closed southbound between J12 (Toddington) and J11A (Chalton) due to a collision which has resulted in a car subsequently catching fire

“Traffic is currently held northbound for Air Ambulance. Emergency services including Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene assisting with traffic management.”

There are diversion routes in place. Drivers are being advised to follow the hollow circle diversion route, which will take commuters off the of M1 at the A5120. The full diversion route can be found on the National Highways update page.
