Birmingham bomb: Trains cancelled and passengers evacuated after unexploded wartime bomb found near New Street line

A wartime bomb has been discovered near a railway line in Birmingham.

Train services have been disrupted and cancelled following the discovery of a 'wartime bomb' in Birmingham. An old mortar device was discovered at a trading estate this morning, close to a rail line, forcing rail bosses to delay a number of services from Birmingham New Street.

An evacuation has been carried out, with a 100-metre exclusion zone set-up and a bomb disposal unit sent to the scene. Lines between New Street and Duddeston had been closed as a result of the alert.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: "We were called to Duddeston Mill Trading Estate, on Duddeston Mill Road, Washwood Heath, shortly before 9.45am today (Tues) following the discovery of an old mortar device. The incident is self-contained within the site, and people have been evacuated.

"An EOD bomb disposal team are attending. A 100 metres exclusion zone is in operation which does impact the railway line at Duddeston, so rail services will be impacted while this is brought to a safe conclusion."

Network Rail said disruption is expected into this afternoon. Lines are now fully open following the earlier closures, however National Rail warned cancellations and delays are still possible following the discovery of a wartime bomb.
