Heartbreaking tributes have been paid after a 12-year-old footballer took his own life.

Riley Townsend from Ashfield, Sutton, was playing for two football clubs - Kirkby Colts FC and Terversal FC, but died on September 1. Riley is known to have struggled with his mental health after being diagnosed with ADHD and autism.

The footballer is survived by his two brothers and a sister, as well as parents Abi and Matt. Taking to social media, his dad said: “Miss you son so bad. I will never forget you. This is killing me.”

Floral tributes and balloons have been left outside his school as the new academic year begins. He had studied at Quarrydale Academy and would have been moving up to Ashfield Comprehensive School this week.

Following his death, a GoFundMe has been launched to cover Riley’s funeral costs. Teversal FC has already donated £200 after Jodie Draycott, Abi’s cousin, started the page.

She said: “It’s very sad and tragic that their 12-year-old boy took his own life due to mental health issues. They are afraid they can’t afford and give him the send off he deserves we are asking people to find it in their hearts to help this family through this very painful time - any amount given will be highly appreciated.”

Tributes have also been paid on social media after news of Riley’s death spread throughout the football community. Posting on Instagram, RisingBallers wrote: “This is absolutely heartbreaking - our thoughts and prayers go out to all of his family, friends, team mates and loved ones during this time.”
