Where are COP26 delegates staying? Where Joe Biden and leaders will stay during Glasgow climate change summit

More than 100 world leaders are in Glasgow for COP26.

No fewer than 30,000 delegates from 180 countries across the globe will also be in attendance at the 26th Conference of the Parties.

The 12 day summit will witness discussions over the impact of climate change and what can be done to prevent ever lasting damage to the environment.

Here’s when the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference 2021 will be taking place, where it will be held and where the legion of delegates will be staying this month.

Where are COP26 delegates staying?

With so many delegates embarking on Glasgow, some will be staying in neighbouring towns and cities during the COP26 climate change conference.

US president Joe Biden is understood to be staying in Edinburgh over the 12 day summit as world leaders discuss how best to tackle the changing climate.

Prime minister Boris Johnson will be staying in Glasgow for COP26, while Prince Charles and son Prince William will represent the UK in the Queen’s absence.

For security purposes the exact location of where individuals are staying has not been made public knowledge over the 26th summit of the Conference of Parties.

Russia president Vladimir Putin will not be in Glasgow but insisted climate change was an "important" priority, and Chinese president Xi Jinping is also unlikely to be there.

Where is COP26 taking place?

The UK is hosting COP26 with Glasgow chosen as the city to hold the climate change summit.

Glasgow’s “experience, commitment to sustainability and world-class facilities” were the reasons given as to why the Scottish city was to hold COP26.

Glasgow aims to be one of the greenest cities in Europe through its Sustainable Glasgow campaign, and a target of being carbon neutral by 2030.

In the city, many of the speeches will be held at Glasgow Science Centre and Scottish Event Campus (SEC), which will form the event’s Green Zone.

The Green Zone means the area will be closed off to the general public and nearby roads will be shut until COP26 has finished, with the last day scheduled for Friday 12 November.

The SEC plays host to the SEC Centre, SEC Armadillo and SSE Hydro venues, all of which will be used as offices for delegations, exhibition space and negotiating rooms.

How long does COP26 last?

COP26 has begun with the first official day of the conference on Sunday 31 October 2021.

Many world leaders, including US president Joe Biden, arrived in Scotland on the morning of day two before making his way to the Glasgow climate change summit.

Over the 12 days there will be numerous discussions between government officials and state representatives around carbon emissions, funding and green solutions to the crisis.

What does COP26 mean?

Though its official name is the United Nations Climate Change Conference, it is often referred to as COP, which means the Conference of the Parties.

It began following the signing of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1994 - a treaty to combat "dangerous human interference with the climate system".

This year’s conference in Glasgow, delayed from November 2020 due to Covid, will be the 26th meeting of world leaders for this purpose - and why the event is known as COP26.
