Batsman Liam Livingstone has been left out of a 14-strong England Lions party that will shadow the main touring squad during this winter’s Ashes in Australia.

The Lancashire talent has impressed in white-ball cricket this summer and is part of England’s squad for the T20 World Cup, which precedes the Ashes, but has not been selected for the subsequent tour.

Several big names, including the likes of Nasser Hussain, Michael Vaughan and David Lloyd, have called for the Cumbria native to already be part of the senior Ashes squad.

The Lions will play against the senior team in two warm-up matches, before facing off in a four-day game against Australia A.

Any members of the Lions’ side who impress in those games could then be called up to the main squad for the Ashes itself.

While Livingstone’s absence is likely to inspire widespread debate, another big talking point is the inclusion of fellow opener Dom Sibley.

The 26-year-old was dropped during the India series this summer, and lost his central contract last week, but is one of four players with test experience to have made the cut for the Lions, alongside wicketkeepers Ben Foakes and James Bracey and spinner Mason Crane.

Also included in the 14-man party are four players without any Lions experience - Lancashire batter Josh Bohannon, Surrey wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, and Warwickshire’s pace bowler Liam Norwell and opening batter Rob Yates.

England Lions squad: Tom Abell (Somerset), Josh Bohannon (Lancashire), James Bracey (Gloucestershire), Brydon Carse (Durham), Mason Crane (Hampshire), Matthew Fisher (Yorkshire), Ben Foakes (Surrey), Alex Lees (Durham), Saqib Mahmood (Lancashire), Liam Norwell (Warwickshire), Matt Parkinson (Lancashire), Dom Sibley (Warwickshire), Jamie Smith (Surrey), Rob Yates (Warwickshire).
