England vs Hungary prediction: likely team line ups of World Cup qualifier at Wembley - result and scorers

The last time England played Hungary was in Budapest and the visiting team put on an impressive display.

Despite a slow first half with half-time showing an even score, goals in the second half from Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane, Harry Maguire and Declan Rice put England’s scorecard to 4-0 by the end of the match at the Puskas Arena, Budapest.

Six weeks later, England carry on sitting at the top of their group while Hungary have flunked down to fourth with little hope of travelling to Qatar next year.

England’s most recent performance against Andorra on Saturday 9 October 2021 saw Jack Grealish and Ben Chilwell score their first ever goals for England. Tammy Abraham, Bukayo Saka and James Ward-Prowse also contributed to England’s 5-0 win.

It was, however, Phil Foden who was the standout performer on the night putting in an impressive display of skill and control in his preferred position of central midfielder.

Hungary have experienced less success with their World Cup campaign, most recently losing to Albania.

England currently need two wins from their next three matches to secure their spot in Qatar, Hungary will have to pray that they win all their upcoming matches while everyone else above them loses.

Who is likely to play in the England squad against Hungary?

After England’s match against Andorra, Gareth Southgate admitted in the press conference: “I have a headache and commit every time I pick a team. We have such a strong competition for places; there were lots of players who did their own confidence and reputation the world of good the other day and that is pleasing to see.”

Playing a team that is 156th in the world rankings enabled England manager Gareth Southgate to rest certain players ahead of the Hungary match this evening and put Foden in a position other than out on the wing.

However, with Declan Rice, Kalvin Phillips and Mason Mount all fighting for central roles as well, it seems likely that Foden will continue sharing the two wide roles with Saka, Grealish, Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho.

Against a team ranked over 100 places higher than Andorra, it seems probable that Southgate will return to Jordan Pickford over Sam Johnstone in goal.

With Kalvin Phillips injured, Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson may well start in the midfield positions.

Harry Maguire is also currently suffering from injury thus posing the question of whether John Stones, who started against Andorra, or Tyrone Mings will start this evening.

Recently nominated Ballon d’Or shortlister Mason Mount is sure to be on the starting line up after playing only 17 minutes against Andorra.

Who is likely to play in the Hungary squad against England?

Endre Botka will be unavailable to play in the match against England due to a suspension. Hungarian manager Marco Rossi will likely turn to Adam Lang to replace Botka as Attila Fiola will also be unable to play due to sustaining an injury.

Laszlo Kleinheisler and Denes Dibusz have both suffered minor injuries and will consequently be unable to play as well.

Who will win in England vs Hungary?

In their previous clashes, England have won 16 times out of a possible 23. Hungary have won five times and there have been two draws.

England will play with a home advantage this evening, and as they won exceptionally comfortably on Hungarian turf in September, there is little reason to believe they won’t be as, if not more, successful in the second leg.

England will take on Hungary in the second leg of their World Cup qualifying matches tonight, Tuesday 12 October 2021 at Wembley Stadium, London.

The Kick off is at 7.45pm BST and will be available to watch on ITV as well as being made available to stream through the ITV hub website and app. Coverage for the game will start at 7.15pm BST.
