England will face the Ivory Coast in another international friendly later this evening (Tuesday 29 March) after beating Switzerland 2-1 in Saturday’s clash at Wembley.

The Three Lions are now just a few months away from the 2022 World Cup, which will take place in Qatar this winter.

Southgate will take this opportunity to experiment with his line-up and formation, much like he did against Switzerland, in order to figure out some key questions regarding his squad and tactics for the upcoming World Cup.

England came from a goal behind to beat Switzerland and extended their winning streak to eight games, momentum they will hope to carry forward tonight and into the World Cup. Harry Kane scored the winning goal via the penalty spot to become England’s joint-second all-time goal scorer.

Southgate handed debuts to three defenders in the game: Marc Guehi, Kyle Walker-Peters and Tyrick Mitchell.

Once again, Southgate is likely to make changes for tonight’s fixture with Harry Maguire, Jack Grealish, Raheem Sterling and Nick Pope all expected to start.

In fact, it is possible that Ben White will remain the only player from Saturday’s starting line-up to keep his place in the side, but he could be deployed in a different role.

West Ham’s Declan Rice is set to start tonight’s game, after impressing from the bench against the Swiss.

The midfielder brought immediate stability to England’s midfield, and Southgate went on to then describe the 23-year-old as a potential long-term successor to current captain Harry Kane.

“He is right among them despite his age. What I’ve seen this season is the confidence that he’s gained from his experience last summer.

“He had a huge impact on the game when he came on. A really mature performance, strong, breaks the game up so well, but now has more confidence to drive with the ball and bring it forward as well.

“Without a doubt, he has all the attributes to be a captain. There will be others, but we are gaining the rewards of the opportunities we had to blood him so young.”

John Stones suffered an injury in the warm-up at Wembley and has since returned to Manchester City.

Southgate is likely to make several changes to his line-up, with Rice, Tyrone Mings and James Ward-Prowse all expected to feature.

The Ivory Coast are also set to shake things up - it is possible that Simon Deli and Burnley’s Maxwel Cornet will start, after coming off the bench during their defeat to France in Paris.

Who are the favourites to win?

This is the first time that these two teams will meet.

The Ivory Coast have failed to reach the CAF’s World Cup play-offs and were knocked out of the recent Africa Cup of Nations tournament at the quarter-final stage.

England are therefore likely to have the edge, but with such a mix-up of formations and line-ups, the Ivory Coast have an outside chance of causing an upset.

Predicted England line-up: Pope; White, Maguire, Mings, Mitchell; Ward-Prowse, Rice, Bellingham; Grealish, Watkins, Sterling.
