Niklas-Wilson Sommer, who plays for FC Nurnberg’s under-23s squad, was attacked in his own home after posing for a photo wearing a Bayern Munich shirt. The two clubs are bitter rivals, and fans did not take kindly to the picture.
Sommer, who is also a prominent Twitch streamer, has more than a million followers on Instagram - where the since-deleted photo was uploaded. Posting a photo of his red, swollen face after the attack, the 26-year-old simply said: “I'm fine, thanks for all the messages.”

Hide AdNurnberg has condemnded the attack, but fans have been making their feelings clear, with banners at the club’s last home game saying things like “Club pride instead of hipster posing. Niklas-Wilson, you're s***,” and another calling him a “Bayern pig”.
A statement from the club said: “During the night from Saturday to Sunday, there was a physical attack on one of our under-23 players. By lying in wait on the doorstep in the early evening and then physically attacking him a few hours later in the night, these people crossed all boundaries.
“The act is apparently a reaction to the player appearing in a Bayern jersey on social media three days earlier. The photo was deleted shortly after publication and the player also publicly apologised.
“The club will never accept players being physically attacked. That is exactly what happened last night through the actions of individuals. The club condemns this behavior in the strongest possible terms. It is absolutely incompatible with the values of FC Nurnberg. The police investigation into the incident began last night. If there are any convictions in this connection, the club will of course react accordingly.”
