Can England fans travel to Rome? Italy and UK restrictions - and Euro 2020 tickets for Ukraine match explained

England will play their first Euro 2020 match away from Wembley Stadium when they travel to Italy to take on Ukraine in the quarter finals of the 2021 Euros.

The football tournament has been kind to England who have played all four of their games so far at Wembley, including the historic win over Germany in the Round of 16.

Progress at Euro 2020 means that England will play their quarter final match against Ukraine at the Stadio Olimpico - but will any Three Lions be allowed to cheer them on in Rome?

Can England fans travel to Italy?

England fans hoping to make the journey over to Rome in time for the game on Saturday night (3 July 2021) will be disappointed due to travel restrictions in place in Italy.

The Football Association has already told England Supporters Travel Club that no tickets will be sold to them or their members due to the current travel restrictions in place.

The crowd at Stadio Olimpico, in Rome, is expected to be significantly reduced with a total capacity of 18,000 spectators allowed into the ground to watch the game in person.

It means that the FA have just over 2,000 tickets to distribute, which it plans to do via the British Embassy, to any England fans currently living in Italy.

What are Italy's travel restrictions?

Travel restrictions put in place to limit the spread of Covid mean that travellers from the UK must self-isolate for five days on arrival in Italy.

After that, travellers are required to take a rapid antigenic or molecular swab test for coronavirus and test negative for immediate release.

All of which means that any UK traveller hoping to watch England in quarter final action in Rome would have needed to arrive in Italy on Monday 28 June.

This would have been before the last 16 match with Germany.

What are the UK's travel restrictions?

There are also restrictions in place for UK travellers upon their return from Italy, due to the country being on the UK government's amber travel list.

Anyone returning to the UK from Italy would need to isolate for at least five days after landing.

The Prime Minister has warned against people from the UK visiting countries on the amber travel list put in place to limit the spread of Covid.

The PM’s official spokesperson said: "People should not be travelling to amber list countries.

"Obviously we appreciate how fans will want to do everything possible to support the England team but we do need to balance that against the need to protect public health.

"We would urge everyone to comply with the guidelines and rules that we have in place."

How do England fans get tickets for Ukraine match?

There might still be England fans at the game due to the number of expatriates, reportedly around 30,000, currently residing in Italy.

Fully vaccinated against Covid expats could be the only England fans in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome for the Three Lions' quarter final tie against Ukraine.

The Football Association is working with tournament organisers UEFA and the British Embassy “to facilitate as many ticket sales to English residents in Italy as possible”.

A statement from England Supporters Travel Club (ESTC) read: "Unfortunately, the FA will not be selling any tickets via the ESTC for this fixture given the travel restrictions in place across both countries, and as such are working with Uefa and the British embassy in Italy to facilitate as many ticket sales to English residents in Italy as possible.”
