The Champions League knockout stage is now edging towards its climax as the semi final stage approaches.

Real Madrid and Villarreal are into the semis and could be joined by Premier League reigning champions Man City and six-time European Cup winners Liverpool tonight.

It has already been a thrilling Champions League, with some big-profile exits in the group stage alone, including Barcelona, and the best is yet to come.

But as we get towards the business stage of the competition, here is a look at the Champions League’s history, including the league table for the competition’s winners.

Who has won the most Champions League titles?

As has been the case in recent years, Real Madrid have dominated the Champions League over the course of its existence, both in its current and previous life as the European Cup.

Los Blancos have racked up 13 Champions League wins, and four of those have come in the last eight years.

AC Milan have won the second most, with seven, most recently winning it in 2007, while Bayern Munich and Liverpool are joint-third with six wins.

Barcelona are on three, Ajax have four, and both Manchester United and Inter Milan have three.

Juventus, Benfica, most recent winners Chelsea, plus Nottingham Forest and Porto are the only others to win it more than once.
