The 2021 FIFA Club World Cup, which is actually being held in 2022, is underway and Chelsea are set to fly the flag for England and Europe this week.

The champions of UEFA, CONMEBOL (The South American Football Confederation), AFC (Asian Football Confederation), CAF (Confederation of African Football), CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football), OFC (Oceania Football Confederation) and a club from the host nation have been or will be taking part to determine the best club team in world football.

Bayern Munich won the last competition, bringing the trophy home for UEFA, but can Chelsea do the same this year?

Here is everything you need to know about the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup (which is entering the semi-final stage), what the fixtures are, who Chelsea are playing and how to watch it in the UK.

When do the FIFA Club World Cup semi-finals start? Who Chelsea are playing and other fixtures

The 2021 FIFA Club World Cup began on February 3 with the final set to take place later this week on February 12, 2022 in the United Arab Emirates.

Taking part are six confederation champions and a team from the host nation.

They are:

  • Palmeiras (CONMEBOL)
  • Chelsea (UEFA)
  • Al Hilal (AFC)
  • Al Ahly (CAF)
  • Monterrey (CONCACAF)
  • AS Pirae (OFC)
  • Al Jazira (Hosts)

The first round saw AS Pirae, who were nominated to represent the OFC, taking on 2020–21 UAE Pro League winners and host team Al Jazira.

The winner of that match took on AFC Champions League holders Al Hilal in the second round while 2020–21 CAF Champions League winners Al Ahly played the 2021 CONCACAF Champions League winner Monterrey in the other second round match.

As the competition enters the semi-final stage, Chelsea will enter along with 2021 Copa Libertadores winners Palmeiras to face the sides who have progressed through the first and second rounds.

There are also matches for fifth and third place to be contested as well as the final.

Here are the results so far from the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup:

  • AS Pirae 1-4 Al Jazira (First Round)
  • Monterry 0-1 Al Ahly (Second Round)
  • Al Hilal 6-1 Al Jazira (Second Round)

Here are the upcoming fixtures and dates for the remainder of the tournament including UK kick off times:

  • Palmeiras v Al Ahly (semi-final) - Tuesday, February 8 (16:30 kick off)
  • Monterrey v Al Jazira (match for fifth place) - Wednesday, February 9 (13:30 kick off)
  • Chelsea v Al-Hilal (semi-final) - Wednesday, February 9 (16:30 kick off)
  • Match for third place - Saturday, February 12 (13:30 kick off)
  • Final - Saturday, February 12 (16:30 kick off)

For elimination matches, extra time is played prior to a penalty shoo-out if required while the fifth and third place matches have no extra time period and go straight to penalties if the scores are level at the end of the match.

Per Chelsea FC’s official website : “Chelsea’s Club World Cup semi-final will be shown on E4 in the UK, with the final on Channel 4. Programming is due to start at 4pm for both games. A highlights programme covering the final will be shown later that day.”
