Can Scotland qualify for the final 16 of Euros 2020? All the scenarios in which the team could reach next change

The Tartan Army remains optimistic that the Scotland national team could excel to the next stage of the Euro 2020 competition, as they prepare to face Croatia at Hampden Park.

But, it will not be a walk in the park. Scotland’s chances of making the final 16 of the competition rely heavily on their performance as they play Croatia, as well as the performance of the other runners up in other groups.

So, how could Steve Clarke’s lads qualify - and how dependent are they on other matches’ results? This is all the scenarios which could see Andy Roberson lead his men into the knockout stages.

If Scotland finish as Group D runners-up

Scotland are in Group D, alongside England, Croatia and Czech Republic.

If Scotland defeat Croatia and the Czech’s defeat England (also playing on 22 June at 8pm), they could come 2nd place in the group.

This would only occur if Scotland’s win is due to more goals than England’s loss.

Scotland’s goal difference is currently -2 while England’s is +1.

If Scotland finish as second place in Group D, they will play the team that finishes second in Group E at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen at 6pm BST on Monday 28 June.

All four teams in Group E could still finish as runners-up. They play their last round of games on Wednesday at 5pm. This group consists of Spain, Sweden, Poland and Slovakia.

At present, Slovakia are at the top of the group. Slovakia have just one point less and could still take the lead. If La Roja (Spain’s national team) draw with Slovakia and Poland defeat Sweden, Spain will be out of the competition.

If Scotland finish third in Group D

If Scotland beat Croatia and England draws with Czech Republic, they will rank third place and still be in with a chance of qualifying.

Clarke’s men will finish third if they cannot better England’s goal difference. The Czechs own the head-to-head advantage over the Scots so cannot finish below them.

However, only the top four third places from the groups will go through, along with the top two teams from each group. There are six groups all together.

It is in this circumstance that Scotland is most dependent on the success of other teams.

If they qualify, the Tartan Army could find themselves cheering on Scotland in Budapest, against Group C winners, the Netherlands. The game would take place on Sunday 27 June.

Another possibility is that Scotland would travel to Seville to face Group B winners, likely to be Belgium, if they can defeat debutants Finland. Scotland would face the Group B contender on 27 June at 8pm.

The final scenario would pit Scotland against the winners of Group E in Glasgow, Scotland’s home grounds.

The game would likely be against the current leading team, Sweden and take place on Tuesday 29 June at 8pm.

If Scotland place last in Group D
