He had previously been joint-top scorer alongside Platini, with nine tournament goals.

Platini, however, did all his work in one summer at the European Championship held in France in 1984, where the forward scored nine goals in just five tournament matches.

He scored two hat-tricks in the group stage to help his cause, the extra-time winner in the semi-finals and the all important first goal of the final as France lifted the trophy.

What makes Platini's performance all the more impressive is that back then the tournament only consisted of eight nations, meaning he played just five matches for his nine goals.

It is good enough for third position in the all-time list behind Platini and Ronaldo.
