Gareth Southgate signs new contract to extend his stay as England boss

It has been confirmed today that the England boss has signed a new contract that will keep him in the role until December 2024.

Southgate’s previous contract was set to run out after next year's World Cup in Qatar, however the FA have put their trust in the 51-year-old and he will now lead the Three Lions to the 2024 Euro tournament.

The former Middlesbrough boss joined ther national team in 2016 and has since earned himself an incredible reputation following England’s success in the 2018 World Cup and the 2020 Euros earlier this year.

The finer details of Southgate’s new contract are unclear, but prior to the Three Lions’ fixtures against Albania and San Marino during the international break it was reported that he could become one of England’s highest paid managers.

As well as Southgate, his assistant coach Steve Holland has also been rewarded for his efforts with a new contract that will see him remain alongside the first team manager till 2024.

On his new contract, Southgate said: "I am delighted that Steve and I have been able to extend our stay in our respective roles.

"It remains an incredible privilege to lead this team. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mark [Bullingham, FA CEO), John [McDermott, FA technical director] and the Board for their support - and of course the players and support team for their hard work.

How have England fans reacted?

Many England supporters have shared the delight at the news of Southgate extending his contract, with the general feeling that the Three Lions boss could lead the country to glory in next year’s World Cup at the third attempt.

However, despite Southgate’s success, there are many that have criticised the former England international and had hoped he would depart following the end of his previous contract.
