Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo shares details of burglary and facial injury on Instagram

Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo has taken to Instagram to share news of a burglary at his home that left him with cuts to the face.

The full-back revealed that he attempted to fight off a gang of robbers while his family were present in the house, with the four perpetrators making off with a number of items of jewellery.

Cancelo has established himself as a key member of City’s starting XI since joining from Juventus in 2019, featuring 26 times across all competitions this term.

The 27-year-old was also voted into the Professional Footballers’ Association Premier League team of the season for 2020-21 last campaign.

What has Cancelo said on the matter?

The City full-back posted a photo of himself to his Instagram story in which he has a visible cut above his eye alongside the caption: “Unfortunately today I was assaulted by four cowards who hurt me and tried to hurt my family.

“When you show resistance, this is what happens. They managed to take all my jewellery and leave me with my face with this state.”

He added: “After so many obstacles in my life, this is just one more that I will overcome”.

What have Man City said on the matter?

The club released an official statement addressing the incident late on Thursday evening.

It reads: “We are shocked and appalled that Joao Cancelo and his family were subjected to a burglary at their home this evening during which Joao was also assaulted.

“Joao and his family are being supported by the Club and he is helping the police with their enquiries as they investigate this very serious matter.”
