It will not just focus on his on-field progress with the likes of Spurs, Lazio, Rangers and Middlesbrough, it will also give a view into his difficult life away from football.

In the documentary makers own words: “Gazza tells the story of Paul Gascoigne, a footballing genius, whose on-field brilliance is matched by a troubled private life and media mania that spirals out of control.”

Episode two will cover tabloid revelations, problems with his ex-wife Sheryl and what the synopsis describes as a very public betrayal by his personal assistant who reveals his ‘deepest, darkest secrets to the world’.

What has Gazza said about the documentary?

He told the BBC: “It was really emotional watching back everything. Some things are very hard to watch, but others are good memories with my friends.

“This is the real story of my time in football - the good and the bad of who I am - and what really happened around me. So much of this has never been seen before.”

Where is the former Spurs and Rangers player now?

Gascoigne now lives on the South Coast in a luxury seaside apartment.

Far from his hometown of Dunston on the south bank of the River Tyne, Gazza now calls Poole in Dorset his home.

He has not been directly involved in football since leaving his role as manager of non-league club Kettering Town in 2005.

What Gazza said about his career

“Hopefully they’ll take away from it the great times I had,” Gazza added.

“There’s a lot that wasn’t good or perfect, but when it comes to the past you can’t change it and have to take the bad with the good – and the good things I’d repeat in a heartbeat.

“I got a lot of media, so that was a pressure. The fans would give us a lot of attention too, but to be honest I didn’t mind that.”
