Who is Ewan Sharp? Analysing the strengths of new Man Utd football coach helping Ralf Rangnick

The Red Devils have announced the appointment of Ewan Sharp as the club's new assistant coach and performance analyst, as they look to continue their off the field overhaul in pursuit of a revival.

He joins his former Toronto FC colleague Chris Armas, now Rangnick's assistant, at Old Trafford.

Where has Sharp worked before?

The Scotsman's links with Rangnick go back to the latter's spell as head of sport and development for Red Bull GmbH. Sharp worked for New York Red Bulls as a performance analyst.

He's also performed a similar role at Toronto FC, as well serving as the director of performance analysis at Northwestern University in the United States.

After impressing Rangnick in his previous duties, Sharp later joined the German for a brief spell at Russian side Lokomotiv Moscow.

What is Sharp's footballing philosophy?

The anti-Ole Gunnar Solskjaer? Possibly.

While working for New York Red Bulls, he revealed: "Our style is something which is really well communicated throughout the organisation, the characteristics we look for in first-team players.

“We try to instil that in the academy players, the USL adopts a very similar shape and playing style to the first team.

“In my role this is hugely beneficial, it helps me in opposition analysis, post-game analysis, the way I go about communicating with players. Without it, it would be very difficult to know what to look for when looking at games.

“For me, the biggest benefit of having this well defined playing style is the players are clear of their expectations, they know what the coaching staff is looking for and what is expected of them when they go out and perform.”
