With one of tennis’ greatest players, Novak Djokovic, currently looking to make it into his fifth French Open grand final, another player is diligently waiting to take to the clay a little later on this afternoon hoping to break a streak of two semi-final appearances but no final - Germany’s Alexander Zverev.

He’s set to take on last year’s finalist, Norway’s Casper Ruud, at Roland Garros today as the unfancied German stormed once again to victory over Argentina’s Tomás Martín Etcheverry in the quarter final, but if history has demonstrated, it is normally this hurdle that he has previously stumbled at.

In the 2022 French Open, Zverev had to withdraw from his semi-final contest against the eventual winner, Spain’s Rafael Nadal, after playing for three hours and 13 minutes after rolling his right ankle during play. The injury caused him to tear all three lateral ligaments in his ankle, leaving him to be wheelchaired off court and, more devastatingly, missing the 2022 Wimbledon tournament.

A year before, at the 2021 French Open, he went a full five sets against Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas, but ultimately fell at the last set, losing to the eventual finalist 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6 - thankfully, it meant missing out on facing who could be his 2023 finals opponent, Novak Djokovic.

Should Zverev manage to overcome Ruud, it would mark his first appearance in a Grand Slam final throughout his 12 year career, and might set him up in good stead for the upcoming 2023 Wimbledon tournament; and hopefully a better seeding. He was ranked 22 this year at the French Open, while Ruud has been seeded at 4.
