When did he turn professional?

Willett followed in the footsteps of the likes of Paul Casey and Nick Faldo when he won the English Amateur Championship at Royal St George’s in 2007 and became the world’s number one ranked amateur 12 months later.

He officially turned professional in May 2008 and secured a European Tour card for the 2009 season.

Progress during his first year as a pro came with a fifth placed finish at the PGA Championship in 2010 and securing a further nine top-ten finishes.

His performances were enough to move Willett into the top 100 of the world rankings.

When did he win his first tournament?

June 2012 provided Willett with the first notable high of is professional career when he won the BMW International Open in Cologne.

Willett saw off Australian Marcus Fraser in the fourth hole of a play-off to land almost £270,000 in prize money.

After the win, he said: “Amazing – it was a tough day,

“I've had some ups and downs in the last 18 months, but I'm injury-free now and I want to thank everybody for the support they've given me.”

Further titles followed with a Nedbank Golf Challenge win in South Africa in December 2014 and an Omega European Masters triumph eight months later.
