The 34-year-old Brit recovered from carding a bogey on the first hole at Augusta to end his opening round with a three-under-par 69.

That left him in third place behind South Korean Sungjae Im and Australia’s Cameron Smith as he prepares to partner American duo Jason Kokrak and Talor Gooch in his second round on Friday evening.

When did he turn professional?

Willett followed in the footsteps of the likes of Paul Casey and Nick Faldo when he won the English Amateur Championship at Royal St George’s in 2007 and became the world’s number one ranked amateur 12 months later.

He officially turned professional in May 2008 and secured a European Tour card for the 2009 season.

Progress during his first year as a pro came with a fifth placed finish at the PGA Championship in 2010 and securing a further nine top-ten finishes.

His performances were enough to move Willett into the top 100 of the world rankings.

When did he win his first tournament?

June 2012 provided Willett with the first notable high of is professional career when he won the BMW International Open in Cologne.

Willett saw off Australian Marcus Fraser in the fourth hole of a play-off to land almost £270,000 in prize money.

After the win, he said: “Amazing – it was a tough day,

“I've had some ups and downs in the last 18 months, but I'm injury-free now and I want to thank everybody for the support they've given me.”

Further titles followed with a Nedbank Golf Challenge win in South Africa in December 2014 and an Omega European Masters triumph eight months later.

It would be fair to say Willett shocked the world when he won the green jacket at the 2016 US Masters.

He was trailing defending champion Jordan Spieth by five shots as the American began the back nine of his final round at Augusta.

A collapse by Spieth was punished by Willett, who carded a bogey-free final round of 67 to end the tournament three shots clear of the American and fellow Englishman Lee Westwood.

That meant Willett became the first British player to win at Augusta since Nick Faldo’s triumph in 2006 and moved him into the top ten of the World Rankings.

Speaking after the win, Willett said: “You come back with your green jacket on thinking everything’s rosy and then at two in the morning he’s up crying, you need to feed him, need to change him, so yeah, it brings you sharply back down.”

Their second child was born in 2018.
