The first ball of the 2022 edition of The Masters was struck at 1pm on Thursday afternoon, as the very best golfers in the world began Day One of the tournament at the Augusta National.

With the Green Jacket up for grabs and so many different narratives at play, including the return of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s pursuit of a Career Grand Slam, it’s shaping up to be a brilliant four days of golf.

However, around half of the field will not see the full four days and a strong start is required to give them the best possible chance of making the cut midway through the tournament.

Here is everything you need to know about when the cut will happen at The Masters and what sort of score is likely to be required in order to avoid dropping out.

When is The Masters 2022 cut?

The cut takes place after every participant has played two full rounds on the course.

That shapes up as 36 holes with an overall par of 144 (72 over 18 holes)

That means it will be decided after play has concluded on Friday, April 8 once round two is complete.

How many players will make The Masters 2022 cut?

In order to make the cut after 36 holes, players must be in the top 50 places, counting ties.

With 91 players taking part in total, just under half the field will be eliminated after day two.

Is the 10 stroke rule still used at The Masters 2022?

The Masters no longer uses the 10 stroke rule when cutting players at the end of day two.

Previously, players within 10 strokes of the lead also made the cut, even if they were not inside the top 50, but that rule was changed in 2020.

What score will be required to make The Masters 2022 cut?

The score required to make sure a player survives the cut will not be determined until after the end of play on day two.

At the 2021 edition of the competition a score of three over par was enough to ensure a return on day three.

A total of 54 players scoring 147 (+3) or better, made the cut last year.

Rory McIlroy failed to make the cut on that occasion, the first time he had been eliminated early at Augusta National since 2010, while defending champion Dustin Johnson also dropped out after missing it by two strokes.

In 2020, a far lower score of three under par was required to make the cut and two time champion Bernhard Langer broke the record of the oldest player ever to do so at 63.

The Masters 2022 Day One scores

Tiger Woods shot a one-under-par 71 on his Masters comeback on Day One, while South Korea’s Im Sung-jae leads after a five-under 67.

Despite Rory McIlroy claiming he felt less pressure this year with all attention on Woods, the 32-year-old finished over par with a 73.
