Blackmore goes into the meeting off the back of her fine performance in claiming the Cheltenham Gold Cup on A Plus Tard last month and is high up among the bookies’ favourites for this year’s race.

However, there are several serious contenders to claim a win in the big race at Aintree - and NationalWorld takes a look at FIVE horses we feel can make an impact.

First past the post?

Escaria Ten 10/1

Adrian Heskin will be on board this Gordon Elliott horse that may well have something to prove at Aintree.

After finishing in third place in the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham last year and being narrowly beaten in the Bobby Chase at Fairyhouse in February, there will need to be an improvement if the eight-year-old is to claim a win in the National.

There have been signs it is coming despite the lack of a win - and now is the time to show it on the biggest stage of all.

Fiddlerontheroof 14/1

There has been some talk of a potential National winner here - especially after being placed in 10 of the last 11 races.

The latest of those came at Ascot in February where Fiddlerontheroof was beaten by half a length by Fortescue in the Swinley Chase.

A last win came in the Colin Park Memorial Intermediate Chase at Carlisle last October and many suspect this horse could be a big hope for Colin Tizzard and Brendan Powell.

Snow Leopardess 8/1

This mare is in fine form ahead of the big race and will be looking for a fourth consecutive win at Aintree this weekend.

Aidan Coleman led the 10-year-old to wins at Bangor and Aintree before Christmas and that was followed up by a 12-length triumph with Jonathan Burke on board in the Mares Chase at Exeter in February.

Coleman will be back in charge at Aintree and Snow Leopardess’ odds will remain low as long as the ground is damp.

That’s not without good reason.

Run Wild Fred 20/1

There has been growing noise surrounding Run Wild Fred’s chances in this year’s National.

They finished second to Fury Road at Leopardstown in December and Stattler in the National Hunt Challenge Cup at Cheltenham last month.

Davy Russell will be in charge of a horse that looks at home on soft ground.  The odds, as they stand, look generous.

Longhouse Poet 16/1

Two seventh-placed finishes in its last seven races should not put anyone off Longhouse Poets.

Recent wins at Punchestown and Gowran Park over the three-mile mark showed plenty of promise, with the latter showing all of the qualities needed to win the National.
