Roger Federer will not be taking part in the 2022 Australian Open which began earlier this week in Melbourne.
The Swiss superstar confirmed last month that he would not be able to participate and also cast doubt over whether he would be able to compete at Wimbledon in June.
He joins Novak Djokovic in playing no part at the event after the Serbian had his visa withdrawn and was deported from the country earlier this month.
Here is what we know about Roger Federer missing the Australian open and his chances of returning in time for the next major event.
Is Roger Federer playing in Australian Open 2022?
Roger Federer will miss the 2022 Australian Open as he continues to recover from knee surgery.
The six time winner, and 20 time Grand Slam champion, missed the 2021 event for the same reason but recovered in time to participate at Wimbledon.
However, the Swiss star took more time off immediately following his exit at the All England Club where he was beaten in the quarter-finals by Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz.
As he continues to recover from further surgery, the 40-year old confirmed in December 2021 that he would miss the Australian Open for the second year in a row.
Will Roger Federer play at Wimbledon 2022?
Roger Federer has cast doubt on whether or not he will be able to take part at Wimbledon in 2022.
In an interview with Le Martin, Federer all but ruled himself out of the event as he continues his rehabilitation.
He said: “I would be extremely surprised if I could play Wimbledon.
"I will be able to resume running quietly in January and resume sessions on the court with complex support in March or April.
"I therefore estimate my return to competition in the summer of 2022."
"My ambition is to see what I'm capable of one last time," he said.
"I also wish I can say goodbye in my own way and on a tennis court. That's why I give my all in my rehabilitation.
"My life is not going to collapse if I don't play a Grand Slam final again.
"But it would be the ultimate dream to go back. And I still believe in it - I believe in these kinds of miracles."
Australian Open 2022: Men’s singles latest odds
With both Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer playing no part at the 2022 Australian Open, the door is wide open for Rafael Nadal to claim his second Melbourne title.
The Spaniard has also won 20 Grand Slams but has only been triumphant in Australia once and that was over a decade ago in 2009.
His lack of success at the event mean that, despite his obvious pedigree, the 35-year old is not the bookmakers favourite to win the event.
Russia’s Daniil Medvedev is the 7/5 favourite for the Men’s Singles title as he looks to win his first ever Grand Slam event.
Also ahead of Nadal is German Alexander Zverev at 3/1 with the Spaniard third favourite at 4/1.
