A multiple-time Super Bowl winner has apologised after accidentally live streaming audio of himself having sex.

Shannon Sharpe’s footage quickly spread across social media, reaching Sharpe’s 3.2m Instagram followers. In the audio, a woman can be heard moaning and a man breathing heavily, but no faces are visible as the camera remains pointed at the ground.

Sharpe, 56, who is well-known as a podcast host and an NFL analyst for ESPN, initially denied any involvement in the leak. In a now-deleted post from his Instagram story, Sharpe's account said: “Beware my Instagram was hacked this morning, my team and I are working vigorously to figure this out.”

Screenshots of the incident reveal that more than 6,500 people were watching the stream at one point. Later, Sharpe addressed the situation on his Nightcap podcast, in what was described as an emergency episode that has already garnered over a million views.

“Obviously I am embarrassed,” he said. “Someone that is extremely, extremely private and to have one of your most intimate details – the audio – heard for the entire world to hear, I’m embarrassed for a number of reasons.

“There are a lot of people that count on Shannon to be professional at all times and I always try to be professional at all times, even when I’m behind closed doors I’m very disappointed in myself, not for the act. I think there are millions and billions of people of consenting age that engage in activities, but for the audio to be heard I’m disappointed in myself.

“I threw my phone on the bed, engaged in an activity. I let a lot of people down.”

Sharpe, a three-time Super Bowl champion with two victories with the Broncos and one with the Ravens, was deeply apologetic over the incident.
