While a couple of the Winter Olympics events get started today, the opening ceremony doesn’t take place until later this week.
Beijing is the first city to ever host both Summer and Winter Games and we are to expect a show-stopper of an opening ceremony if the hosts’ 2008 edition is anything to go by.

The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics opening ceremony will take place on Friday February 4.
The ceremony is due to get underway at 12pm GMT and has been given a provisional running time of around one hour and 40 minutes, though it is likely to overrun.
Where is the opening ceremony being held?
The ceremony will be held in the Beijing National Stadium - also known as the Bird’s Nest - which also hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics ceremony.
The stadium will also be the venue for the closing ceremony later this month.

Eurosport and BBC are sharing coverage of the Winter Olympics in the UK.
Coverage of the opening ceremony will be broadcast live on BBC One from 11:30am.
