A new sporting docuseries is on the way as the creators of Formula 1: Drive to Survive bring ‘Break Point’ to Netflix. The show will follow the professionals of the tennis world.

The ten-episode show will be serving high-level blood, sweat and drama as top tennis players consider retirement while youngsters rise through the ranks.

Following stars across the world to Grand Slams and tournaments, viewers will also get a chance to see the stars behind the rackets as they talk not only about their tennis careers but also deeper issues including racism, mental health and sexism in sport.

PeopleWorld takes a look at the five players central to the first five episodes.

Episode one - Nick Kyrgios

Netflix states that episode one, named the Maverick, ‘follows the outsider with the killer serve and the ‘it’ factor when it comes to entertaining the crowd,’ referencing Australian player Nick Kyrgios.

Nick became a professional tennis player in 2013 and is only one of three people to have beaten the ‘big three’ including Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and the newly-retired Roger Federer, the first time he played them.

While Nick has gained positive attention for his success in the sport, namely getting through to a major final in Wimbledon 2022 and being a three-time doubles champ, he is also seen as controversial due to his ‘epic displays of ranting, racquet-wrecking and trash-talking’ on the courts.

Episode two - Novak Djokovic

2023 marks 20 years since Novak Djokovic began his professional career when he broke Nadal and Federer's streak of 11 consecutive wins to build up to his first major win at the 2008 Australian Open.

The second episode of Break Point focuses on the 21-time Grand Slam winner as he is deported from Australia as a result of his vaccination status.

Novak was the defending champion at the event and the favourite to win, but consequently lost his number one place in the world standings following the decision to not allow him to play.

Episode three - Maria Sakkari

‘California Dreaming’ allows the audience to get to know upcomer Maria Sakkari, a Greek powerhouse as she enters the Indian Wells Masters tennis championship.

The Indian Wells slam takes place in California and acts as a guide for tennis fans to see who would be able to break through the net into the big time.

Alongside Maria Sakkari, Californian native Taylor Fritz also steps up to the big time as he aims to become the first American in over 20 years to win his home state title.

Episode four - Paula Badosa

Paula Badosa is a Spanish tennis professional who has been ranked as high as number two by the Women’s Tennis Association.

For any sportsperson, their home championship is the one to win and for Paula, this is no different.

Netflix’s Break Point sees how far the number two could make it in the Madrid Open.

Episode five - Rafael Nadal

Rounding out the first five episodes is another Spanish legend, the one and only Rafael Nadal, known as the ‘King of Clay’.

‘Rafa’ holds the record for the most Grand Slam wins overall and returned to the French Open in 2022 with an outstanding 13 wins on the infamous clay courts.

Although experience is essential, Rafael must face off some younger talent to ensure his record stays untouchable.

Similar to some of the players in the series, it is unlucky for some, as five episodes are released on Friday 13 January, before the final five air on Netflix in June 2023.
